The Unyielding Spirit of Father Ihor Makar: A Story of Faith, Courage, and Community

Watch the Story of Father Ihor Makar

Learn more about Father Ihor’s incredible journey of faith amidst conflict. Watch the video, filmed earlier this year, to see the impact of his work in Kherson and witness the hope that continues to thrive despite the challenges this community faces.

The parish of Holy Martyr Cyprian and Martyr Justina was officially founded in 2005, with Father Ihor holding the first Divine Liturgy that same year. Initially, services took place in a private home, and in 2012, a chapel was set up in his residence. By 2014, with the growing needs of the community, a new chapel was consecrated to serve as a place of worship.

Then, in February 2022, the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine thrust Kherson into the heart of the conflict. Father Ihor did not waver. Despite the occupation and ongoing violence, he became a lifeline for his parishioners and the broader community. He organized the distribution of medicine, food, and clothing, and launched a free kitchen, ensuring that the most vulnerable were cared for during the darkest of times. Even as Russian forces occupied Kherson, Father Ihor’s commitment to serving his people never faltered. And when the city was liberated in November 2022, he returned to his parish, ready to continue his mission.

UAid Direct has been working alongside Father Ihor since the summer of 2022, delivering critical humanitarian aid to the communities in Kherson.  With your support, we’ve been able to provide food, medicine, and essential supplies to those in desperate need. Father Ihor’s tireless efforts to care for his community have been an inspiration to us all.

In early 2024, we had the privilege of documenting Father Ihor’s incredible journey and the work he’s done to help rebuild Kherson. His courage, resilience, and deep faith were the foundation of his mission, and it was clear how deeply he loved and served his community. The video captures a story of hope and determination in the midst of conflict — but little did we know, more devastation was still to come.

Tragedy Strikes Again

On Sunday, August 11, 2024, tragedy struck Father Ihor’s community once more. A Russian missile destroyed the Church of the Holy Martyr Cyprian and Martyr Justina, the very church that Father Ihor had nurtured and led for two decades. The church, which stood just 300 meters from the Dnipro River, was situated on the front line of the conflict. This attack followed an earlier drone strike on August 9, which caused a fire that local residents and parishioners had managed to extinguish.

The destruction of the church is a devastating blow to the community. This building was more than just a place of worship — it was a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity. Despite this heartbreaking loss, Father Ihor remains undeterred in his mission to serve his people.

Now, more than ever, we need your help. The people of Kherson are facing unimaginable challenges, but with your support, we can help them rebuild and recover.

Donate today to provide essential supplies and assistance to those in need, and help keep Father Ihor’s mission alive.

Spotlight on Ihor Tsurkan: Hope in Kherson’s Darkest Days

The team at UAid Direct has been honored to work with many incredible individuals who risk their lives to provide aid and support to those in war-torn Ukraine. One of these extraordinary individuals is Ihor Tsurkan, a volunteer leader in Kherson.
We first began working with Ihor when Kherson, on the Dnipro’s right bank, was still under Russian occupation. This was long before the destruction of the dam that flooded much of the city in 2023. His story is one of courage, resourcefulness, and an unbreakable commitment to his community.
