Spotlight on Elena: A Lifeline for Odessa’s Elderly and Homeless

UAid Direct has been fortunate to work with countless remarkable individuals who embody the spirit of service and resilience in Ukraine. One such individual is Elena, a dedicated volunteer based in Odessa. Known for her tireless efforts to support the elderly and the homeless, Elena’s work has become a beacon of hope for some of the most vulnerable populations in Ukraine’s third-largest city.

Stepping Up for the Forgotten

Odessa has remained far enough from the front lines of conflict to avoid the worst of the fighting, but the war’s effects are still felt deeply. Since the invasion, the city has taken in more than 150,000 refugees, putting immense strain on its housing, healthcare, and social services. In the midst of this crisis, Elena has stepped in to fill a critical gap—focusing her efforts on those often forgotten in the chaos: the elderly and homeless.

Her initiative, lovingly named BaDed (Babushka i Dedushka or Grandma and Grandpa), reflects her deep compassion for the elderly, who are often left behind when disaster strikes. While middle-class families may find ways to survive or relocate, many elderly people have no options. They rely entirely on external support to meet their most basic needs. Elena and her team are their lifeline, delivering essential items like food, clothing, shoes, and hygiene products door-to-door.

Aiding Odessa’s Most Vulnerable

Elena’s work doesn’t stop with the elderly. She also dedicates her time to helping Odessa’s homeless population, whose numbers have swelled due to the influx of refugees. As resources become scarcer, those without homes are often left with nothing. Elena, undeterred by the scale of the crisis, organizes regular supply runs, delivering meals, hygiene products, and even new shoes to those living on the streets.

But what truly sets Elena apart is her unwavering dedication to making sure everyone is cared for, no matter their situation. Her efforts stretch beyond the city’s limits to nearby villages, where she and her team continue their door-to-door work, ensuring no one is forgotten. Her compassion and commitment have made her a trusted partner in Odessa, known for her reliability and the deep connections she’s built within the community.

A Hero in Humanitarian Aid

In addition to her work in Odessa, Elena has been instrumental in coordinating aid for other regions. It was through her involvement with the Maternity Clinic in Kherson that we realized the immense value of her work. She has gone above and beyond, delivering essential supplies and helping vulnerable populations in one of the most heavily affected areas of the country.

Elena’s efforts to bring aid to Odessa and Kherson, despite the danger and challenges, were a clear indicator that we were working with the right person. Her willingness to serve where help is needed most has solidified her role as one of UAid Direct’s key contacts on the ground. Her impact extends beyond just delivering supplies—she is a connector, a leader, and an unwavering advocate for those without a voice.

Spotlight on Ihor Tsurkan: Hope in Kherson’s Darkest Days

The team at UAid Direct has been honored to work with many incredible individuals who risk their lives to provide aid and support to those in war-torn Ukraine. One of these extraordinary individuals is Ihor Tsurkan, a volunteer leader in Kherson.
We first began working with Ihor when Kherson, on the Dnipro’s right bank, was still under Russian occupation. This was long before the destruction of the dam that flooded much of the city in 2023. His story is one of courage, resourcefulness, and an unbreakable commitment to his community.
